Undisputably one of the most popular vessels with the Maryland and Virginia watermen.  For generations they have made their livelihood from the Bay's rich marine resources.  The boat's origin and evolution can be traced over a period of years beginning with the Chesapeake Bay log canoe.  The forerunner of the wooden deadrise, the log canoe was powered by sail and was for years the most used vessel in the bay.  In 1880 the U.S. Census Bureau revealed in a Fish Commission report that there were 6,300 canoes in use in the bay.

The Sharp bow and the stern of the log canoe allowed it to push the chop away when running the boat and maintain a stable platform which watermen needed while achored stern to sea.
The advent of marine engines and a scarcity of large logs eventually led to development of boats which incorporated the design, shallow draft and length of the canoe, but which were lighter and more suited to engine power.  Some of these designs were Hoopers Islands Drake Tail and the Pot Pie or Schooner stern.  In Virginia numerous round stern work boats were built and until approximately thirty years ago, the round stern was very popular.  However, in recent years, the box stern became the standard.
The classic Chesapeake Bay Deadrise has evolved from the sea conditions and the advent of technology in building maintenance free boats from long lasting material.
The Chesapeake Classic 24, 26 and 28, available with a modern cabin is a fine example of this evolution......they have a wide beam, shallow draft, good stability and follow the V bow of their predecessors.
